Motions in European Competitions

The list below give as complete an overview of the motions used at different European debating tournaments as it was possible to trace in the academic year 2012-2013. All European open or university competitions were included (as well as Worlds) as far as known. The tournaments are sorted in chronological order. Tournaments without motions, or missing motions in tournaments have been made orange.

Please share with as many people as might find this useful. Feel free to add the motions from any tournament that is missing in this list! This includes tournaments in languages other than English, although preferably in translation. Send an email or Facebook message to Anne Valkering.

The overview does not provide any rating of motions used at competitions. Nor does it provide context to debates that may be essentially national issues. Motions from 2011-2012 can be found in the blogpost below. For an overview of motions from other regions, please check:

Multiple events

When more than three events take place on any single day, they will not show up on the monthly calendar simultaneously. The calendar will give you the option of clicking on 2, 3, etc more and see the other events. Alternatively, you can select the weekly or daily calendar to see all events taking place.

Updated Calendar

The European Debate Calendar is now fully updated for the 2011-2012 season. We intend to keep track of all university-level debating events in Europe, including national ones, so as to make sure everyone knows what's going on in other parts of the continent. Please help us to keep this calendar up to date by sending your events to us!

You can click on an event to find more information and a link to their website, Facebook page or other site for more information.
